CCG lay member wins BBC Radio Norfolk volunteer of the year award

A lay member on NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group’s (CCG) governing body has been named community volunteer of the year by BBC Radio Norfolk.

Trevor Saunders was nominated by three people and shortlisted for the community category of the awards. He was invited onto the BBC Radio Norfolk Chris Goreham Breakfast Show on Monday December 9 and named as the winner.

Alongside his lay member patient engagement role at the CCG, Trevor has been busy leading on a wide range of projects this year which have included successfully collecting 2,500 Christmas stockings to give to people in need across Norfolk and Waveney. He has also created Start-up Saturdays, an initiative set up to help people prepare themselves for the world of work and to start up their own businesses, and the Men - Talk About it forum to encourage men to talk about mental health issues.  In addition, Trevor has organised health walks and training for volunteers.

Trevor, who has been a member of the CCG’s governing body for the last year and a half, said: “I am delighted to win this award. This is seen as a very prestigious accolade in recognition of the many voluntary initiatives I have organised and been involved with. This includes the Christmas Stocking Campaign which involves filling and distributing 2500 Christmas stockings to people in need across Norfolk and Waveney. It’s really nice that as a volunteer that people appreciate what you do.”

Dr Liam Stevens, Chair of NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney CCG, said: “Congratulations to Trevor on this award. This is well-deserved and a testament to the hard work that he has put into volunteering in the local community. Everyone at the CCG is pleased for him and proud of what he has achieved.”
